Scammer Loses 60 BTC, Ledger with Stealing Implants
A scammer lost cryptocurrencies worth approximately $4.8 million, which he had previously stolen himself. The funds were stored on modified Ledger wallets that contained hardware implants stealing seed phrases. As a result of this scam, over $103.4 million was lost from 530 wallets. Ledger confirmed that at least one of their devices had an implant, and the theft primarily occurred in Southeast Asia. The scammer was involved in so-called "task fraud," where he paid internet users for fake product reviews. Ledger has suspended the sale of its wallets in Southeast Asia and at MediaMarkt in Germany. Trezor is also closing some sales points due to concerns about the security of its devices. Ledger plans to introduce a new wallet model, Atom, which is designed to block implants and detect tampering.
