US and China Establish AI Hotline
The US and China have launched a hotline for artificial intelligence (AI), announced by the White House following Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to Washington. The new US-China Super Intelligence Dialogue will explore the risks and benefits of AI, with initial discussions scheduled for November. A separate channel will address AI incidents. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer likened the channel to the Cold War-era red phone between the Kremlin and the White House. Xi emphasized that AI should always remain under human control. Despite the talks, the US maintains its commitment to advancing its own AI initiatives. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent previously initiated discussions on AI risks with China while asserting that the US would not slow its AI development. A report from Stanford's 2026 AI Index highlighted a significant funding disparity, with private investments in US AI reaching 285.9 billion dollars in 2025 compared to China's 12.4 billion dollars. However, the performance gap between the leading US AI model and its top Chinese competitor is only 2.7%. In contrast, the UK government has advised its staff to minimize AI usage to reduce environmental impact, suggesting alternatives like spreadsheets when possible. Trump and Xi are expected to meet again in November at the APEC summit in Shenzhen, coinciding with the first AI talks.
