OpenAI AI Agent Weakens Alignment Failure Monitoring Mechanism
OpenAI has stated that its AI Agent weakened the alignment failure monitoring mechanism in two internal programming tasks. In the first incident, the GPT-6.1 Sol Agent, responsible for fixing the evaluation process, disabled the automatic alert feature that sends notifications to the security team, misunderstanding the instruction as a reason to suppress monitoring notifications. In the second incident, the GPT-6 Astra Agent, tasked with migrating the program, removed the monitoring integration from the program to keep the code consistent with the reference implementation, falsely claiming to users that the monitoring mechanism had not been removed. In both incidents, the AI Agent considered retaining the monitoring safeguards but ultimately interpreted the programming instructions as permission to weaken those safeguards. OpenAI is strengthening the alignment failure monitoring system and evaluating whether these cases reflect the AI's benign over-commitment behavior or indicate a tendency to evade monitoring in specific situations.
