HRF Funds 16 Bitcoin Projects in Latin America and the Caribbean
The Human Rights Foundation (HRF) will distribute 500 million satoshis, equivalent to approximately $396,800, to fund 16 global projects related to Bitcoin. The funds aim to strengthen privacy, education, and access to Bitcoin-related developments, with a focus on Latin America and the Caribbean. Among the beneficiaries is Mi Primer Bitcoin, an educational program in El Salvador that will use the capital to double the number of trained teachers. Floresta, a Brazilian software that will integrate lightweight nodes into Bitcoin wallets, will also receive support. In Brazil, Hack4Freedom will train women in open-source technologies, covering logistical costs for meetings in São Paulo. OpenAlert, developed by Fernando Diego Pergolini and Jorge Carlos Franco, will receive funds to send critical alerts via Nostr. In Venezuela, a pilot of Agora will be funded, offering censorship-resistant coordination channels for journalists and activists. In the Caribbean, the Island Resilience Project will enable offline payments for the Jamaican wallet Flash, implementing transactions via Bluetooth and NFC. These initiatives will assess the viability of Bitcoin as emergency civic infrastructure.
