Fraudsters Steal 110,270 USDT Posing as Coinbase Employees
The Massachusetts Attorney General has filed a lawsuit for the confiscation of 110,270 USDT stolen from a local resident by fraudsters posing as Coinbase employees. The lawsuit has been submitted to the federal court in Massachusetts. The crypto trader, communicating via email, provided the perpetrators with access details to his account, believing he was in contact with Coinbase's support service. The fraudsters convinced the victim to disclose his login, password, and other confidential information, after which the stablecoins were withdrawn from the account. Part of the stolen funds was traced to a crypto address on Binance, where law enforcement seized assets in August. At the time of filing the lawsuit, the confiscated stablecoins were valued at $47,000. Prosecutors noted that fraudsters often use account takeover to gain unauthorized access to accounts on cryptocurrency platforms and social media. In the U.S., assets obtained through criminal means can be seized under civil forfeiture, allowing victims to claim their rights to the seized assets through the court. Previously, the Florida Attorney General helped recover $5.4 million for victims of crypto fraud.
