Fed's Hawkish Signals Strengthen, September CPI Becomes Key for Rate Hike
On August 31, Wall Street analyst Nick Timiraos stated that Federal Reserve Chairman Waller sent hawkish signals at the global central bank annual meeting, believing that the current financial environment is not restrictive and that recent improvements in inflation are insufficient to prove that price pressures have eased. The market has raised expectations for a rate hike by the Fed in September, with some institutions predicting one hike each in September and December this year. Timiraos pointed out that the August CPI, to be released on September 11, will be crucial in determining the direction of September's policy. If inflation continues to cool, the Fed may keep rates unchanged; however, if the CPI strengthens again, Waller will face greater policy pressure, and remaining inactive may be difficult to justify. Meanwhile, divisions between hawks and doves within the Fed have intensified, with three officials voting against at the last meeting and others supporting a rate hike. The market is closely watching the impact of inflation data, tariffs, the situation in the Middle East, and the AI investment boom on price pressures.
