Tesla Launches Cybercab with Only 45 Registered in Texas
Tesla launched the Cybercab, designed for autonomous driving, in Austin, Texas on September 3. The event was not live-streamed and had a relatively low profile. Tesla has registered 45 Cybercabs in Texas, but it is unclear how many will be put into commercial operation. The Cybercab is a two-seat, fully electric autonomous vehicle that does not come equipped with a steering wheel, pedals, or rearview mirrors, relying primarily on eight cameras and an AI system for autonomous driving. Tesla has a total of 420 autonomous vehicles in Texas, while Waymo has registered 988. According to Robotaxi Tracker, Tesla operates approximately 256 autonomous vehicles without safety drivers across six cities, while Waymo operates around 4,000 vehicles in 14 cities. Currently, there is no announced consumer sales timeline for the Cybercab, but Tesla has opened registration for fleet purchases and related infrastructure partnerships. This launch is seen as a key step in Musk's push for Tesla to transition into an autonomous driving and robotics company, though its expansion speed, regulatory approvals, and operational capabilities still face challenges.
