Argentina to Implement Tax Information Exchange on Cryptocurrencies from 2029
Argentina has committed to implementing the Crypto Asset Reporting Framework (CARF) and will begin automatic tax information exchange on crypto assets by September 2029 at the latest. The country joins 77 jurisdictions that have adopted the OECD standard backed by the G20. The CARF will facilitate data exchange between tax administrations regarding transactions with crypto assets. Although a deadline for exchanges is established, a new tax regime does not activate immediately. Before 2029, Argentina must incorporate the standard into its legislation, define the competent authority, and establish obligations for crypto asset service providers. The framework primarily targets exchanges and operators that facilitate transactions of crypto assets. These providers will need to identify users and collect information for international reporting, including name, address, tax residence jurisdiction, and tax identification number, as well as data on operations. The implementation of the CARF does not automatically imply a new tax, as the standard does not determine the existence of a tax obligation. The Revenue and Customs Control Agency (ARCA) will be able to access standardized information on operations of Argentine residents abroad. The Global Forum will oversee the process and assist in its implementation, and the first annual reporting period in Argentina has yet to be defined.
