Wall Street Companies Embrace AI, but Limited Impact on Profits
More and more Wall Street companies are incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) tools, but only 12% have quantified the economic value of their implementation. An analysis by Barclays reveals that nearly half of the companies mentioned AI in their earnings presentations, but most do not provide concrete figures. The technology, financial, and healthcare sectors represent 68% of the companies that did present data. Implementing AI can increase efficiency without translating into immediate profits, as it involves high costs in software, infrastructure, and specialized personnel. Although companies can improve productivity, capital and operational expenses can counteract these benefits. According to Barclays, companies that shared data reported an average improvement of 56% in operational efficiency, a figure that has not changed significantly in three years. Many companies are still in the testing phase, and not all AI implementations directly impact revenues. Positive examples include Meta, which reported an 8.3% increase in ad clicks, and Chewy, which expects to save $50 million by 2027 thanks to AI. Hilton is also looking to reduce costs and improve margins through this technology. Despite this, spending on AI infrastructure continues to rise, with projections reaching $31.6 trillion by 2050.
