Starknet Governance Poll Supports Post-Quantum L1 Research
A non-binding Starknet governance poll concluded with 93.52% of voting power in favor of researching the potential for Starknet to become an independent post-quantum-secure layer-1 network. The poll does not authorize any migration, only permitting researchers to study the proposal. Starknet operates as a layer-2 network on Ethereum, which provides it with essential security properties but also ties its security to Ethereum's cryptography. The Starknet Foundation believes that STARK proofs could be beneficial against future quantum threats and highlights the potential of Starknet's programmable accounts for alternative signature schemes. A joint research group will be formed to explore technical trade-offs and publish findings for the community. Key questions remain regarding asset bridging, data availability, and the roles of existing validators and applications. The vote indicates community interest but does not imply an imminent launch or economic redesign. The focus is now on developing a transparent technical proposal for evaluation.
