Solana Implements 1 SOL Burn for Vulnerability Reports
Firedancer, Solana's validator client, requires burning 1 SOL for each vulnerability report submitted to its bounty program, according to updated terms on October 26, 2026. This measure aims to reduce the volume of reports generated by artificial intelligence (AI). The burn, equivalent to about 100 dollars, is irreversible, even if the report is invalid or duplicates a previous finding. Reports without this payment can be reviewed but are not eligible for rewards, which are paid in USDC. The decision follows an audit contest with a fund of 1 million dollars, held between April 9 and May 9, 2026, where Firedancer received 809 reports from 162 researchers, of which only 127 provided unique security findings. Ishan Bhatt from Jump Crypto highlighted that AI has made finding bugs easier, but assessing their validity remains costly. To contain the volume of reports, character limits are set on the forms. Firedancer expects to send an initial response within up to 96 hours. Additionally, the program offers higher incentives until November 20, 2026, with double the usual reward for eligible reports and triple for specific findings related to Alpenglow, Solana's new consensus system, where critical errors can receive up to 300,000 dollars.
