New Regulations for Cryptocurrency ATMs in Alabama Take Effect, New Users Can Get Full Refunds
The new refund regulations for cryptocurrency ATM operators in Alabama took effect on October 1. Eligible new users can receive a full refund of the transaction amount and fees, while existing users can receive half of the transaction amount and fees refunded. New user eligibility covers the first cryptocurrency ATM transaction and the following 30 days, and disputes must be reported to the operator, law enforcement, and the Alabama Securities Commission (ASC) within 60 calendar days, along with a fraud report. New users have a daily and monthly transaction limit of $1,000 and $10,000, respectively, while existing users have a daily limit of $10,500. Operators are required to disclose fees, cryptocurrency, and USD amounts along with exchange rate information; U.S.-based operators must provide 24/7 free customer service in the U.S. Records from the FBI show that in 2025, Alabama had 177 complaints related to cryptocurrency ATMs, with reported losses nearing $3 million; during the same period, there were 13,460 related complaints nationwide, with losses approaching $389 million.
