Illinois Delays 0.2% Crypto Asset Tax Implementation to July 1

Illinois state officials have agreed to postpone the implementation date of the 0.2% digital asset tax from January 1, 2027, to July 1, in order to address related legal disputes. This delay arrangement still requires court approval. The Digital Chamber filed a lawsuit in July, arguing that the tax provision was included in the state budget without sufficient discussion and public feedback. The organization stated that this delay does not mean the tax has been abolished, and they will continue to seek to overturn the tax through litigation. The Illinois Department of Revenue has released a draft of the digital asset tax implementation guidelines and is open for public comment until October 30.
