Federal Reserve Total Assets Reach $6.73 Trillion, Renewed Debate on Reserves
As of August 26, the total assets of the Federal Reserve have been recorded at $6.730912 trillion, reigniting the debate over the adequacy of reserves. According to the Fed's H.4.1 statistics, total assets amount to $6.730912 trillion, while the July monetary policy report presented the balance sheet size at $6.7 trillion and bank reserves at approximately $3.1 trillion. Cleveland Federal Reserve Bank President noted that it is difficult to estimate the turning point from a 'sufficient' to a 'deficient' state of reserves, emphasizing the need to closely monitor movements in the short-term funding market. Reserves are funds that banks have deposited with the Fed, and a certain level of reserves is necessary for the Fed to manage short-term interest rates stably. The Fed explained in the July monetary policy report that it continues to purchase short-term Treasury securities for reserve management purposes. The FOMC announced on July 29 that it would keep the target range for the federal funds rate at 3.50% to 3.75%, committing to maintaining sufficient reserves. President Hamek pointed out that inflation is too high and current policies are not sufficiently restrictive. Recently, $2.5 billion has flowed into Bitcoin ETFs, interpreted as a movement of funds due to concerns over the depreciation of the dollar. This debate revolves around the need for a buffer in monetary policy operations rather than the size of the Fed's assets, and the impact on Bitcoin must be considered alongside Treasury long-term bond repurchases and dollar flows.
