ECB Plans Special Review of Data Center Loans
The European Central Bank (ECB) is considering a special review of loans related to data centers to assess the potential risks arising from fluctuations in market sentiment and valuations in the artificial intelligence sector. According to informed sources, senior officials at the ECB have proposed this review during internal discussions and talks with regulatory banks. Concerns about rising interest rates and increasing opposition to the construction of data centers may put pressure on the data center loan sector, as global regulators are intensifying their scrutiny of banks regarding AI-related risks. This review may take the form of on-site inspections, focusing on how banks assess future cash flows and collateral values, as well as how they provision for potential defaults. The scope of this investigation is expected to be less extensive than the reviews conducted several years ago on leveraged financing, which had previously caused tensions between regulators and banks. Currently, the ECB has not yet determined the specific approach for the review.
