E Wei Nan: AI Drives Equality in Scientific Research, Future Citizen Scientists Will Become Main Force
Academician E Wei Nan from the Chinese Academy of Sciences stated at the Guanghua Forum that artificial intelligence will significantly lower the barriers to scientific research and promote equality in this field. Through open laboratories and cloud services, any team or individual with ideas and capabilities can participate in technological innovation. He believes that in the future, citizen scientists will become the main force in scientific research. E Wei Nan pointed out that the fundamental reason for the internal competition among enterprises is the lack of innovation capability. Although high-end industrial software and CNC systems are constrained by external factors, it is possible to build an AI-native industrial software system, which is expected to match or even surpass Siemens' system within one to two years. He differentiated between AI for Science and AI for Industry, predicting that modeling for industrial production lines could be achieved within three to five years. At the same time, he warned that the current scientific research system will face tremendous challenges and predicted that the form of research outcomes will shift from papers to intellectual property.
