Iran Threatens to Strike Undersea Cables in the Gulf, AI Computing Expansion Faces Risks
On October 24, two senior Iranian security officials revealed that Iran has developed a plan to strike undersea communication cables in the Gulf if the U.S. and Israel launch further attacks, and will prevent repairs to extend communication disruption. Officials from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps have threatened to target seven major internet cables beneath the Strait of Hormuz if infrastructure is attacked. This threat adds new communication risks to cloud computing and AI infrastructure in the Gulf region. According to Reuters, previous Iranian attacks have already hit two Amazon AWS facilities in the UAE and damaged infrastructure near one facility in Bahrain. Analysts point out that simultaneous damage to multiple cables could disrupt financial transactions, e-commerce, and cloud computing services, but the actual impact depends on traffic rerouting capabilities and backup line capacity. The international bandwidth crossing the Strait of Hormuz accounts for less than 1% of the global total, so the direct impact on global communications may be limited. Microsoft plans to invest over $10 billion in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Kuwait by 2030, and over $400 million to improve undersea and land network connections in the Middle East to enhance the resilience of digital infrastructure.
