Digital Euro Close to Implementation, Inflation in Eurozone at 3.8%
The President of the European Central Bank, Christine Lagarde, announced plans to introduce a digital euro during the annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund. The digital euro is intended to support everyday transactions and increase the eurozone's independence from external payment service providers. Inflation in the eurozone reached 3.8% in September, primarily due to rising energy commodity prices. Despite forecasts that inflation will remain above target until mid-2027, the central bank does not plan to take drastic actions in monetary policy. The digital euro is meant to complement traditional cash, increasing competition in the payment market. The project aims to create a stable alternative to private assets, and the European Central Bank has launched a pilot system called Pontes for wholesale settlements on tokenized assets. Full implementation of the system is planned for 2028.
