Davy Heuts Regains Access to 0.05 Bitcoin from 2013 with AI
Davy Heuts lost access to 0.05 bitcoin that he purchased in 2013. With the help of AI, he developed a program that tested local passwords. After more than 1.8 billion attempts, he regained access to the bitcoin, which was now worth approximately 3800 euros. Heuts bought the bitcoin as a joke and lost his password in 2020. After forgetting his password and failing to try common combinations, he considered the coins lost. In early October, he estimated the value of the bitcoin at 3800 euros. He had AI write a program that automatically tried password variants, using his old words and number sequences. The program tested nearly 100,000 possibilities per second and eventually found a match. After logging in, Heuts initially saw a balance of zero euros, but after searching through old purchase emails and transactions on the blockchain, he discovered that the bitcoin was still on the old address. Eventually, he found the amount in a separate part of his account and has since transferred it to his crypto wallet.
