Citadel Predicts 0.25% Rate Hike in July
Citadel expects a 0.25% rate hike at the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting on the 29th. While many in the market anticipate a rate freeze, this meeting is expected to be a crossroads between those advocating for a hike and those supporting a hold. Citadel believes that Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh will raise the benchmark rate by 0.25%, bringing the U.S. rate to 3.75% to 4.00%. The general market expectation is for a decision in September, but Citadel has pointed to July. Frank Platt, head of macro strategy at Citadel Securities, stated that a surprise hike would mark the end of the forward guidance era. Conversely, Kraken economist Thomas Purpura argued that the most likely outcome of the July FOMC is a rate freeze. According to the CME Group FedWatch, the probability of a July hike is 35.8%, up from 25.7% a week ago. Bitcoin is trading at $63,948, showing a halt in its upward momentum, while Ethereum is at $1,911, Ripple at $1.08, and Solana at $73.67. This FOMC meeting will not only test the level of rates but also the Fed's communication style; a freeze would likely maintain the path for a September hike, while a hike could be interpreted as a signal deviating from forward guidance.
