CFTC to discuss AI trading oversight with crypto industry participants

The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission is initiating discussions on AI trading oversight. The CFTC’s innovation task force will hold its first Frontier Forum on Super Intelligence on Wednesday to address the impact of advanced AI on U.S. financial markets and regulatory challenges in monitoring autonomous AI trading. CFTC Chairman Michael Selig will open the forum, with representatives from Tempo, Hedera, and Chainlink attending. The discussions arise as autonomous payments by AI agents using blockchain and stablecoins are becoming a new use case. Concurrently, the crypto industry is urging the U.S. SEC to clarify crypto-related regulations, as the CLARITY Act has stalled in Congress. Industry participants have submitted comments on the SEC’s proposed 'Regulation Crypto Assets,' seeking clear standards on when a token is no longer tied to an investment contract, treatment of secondary-market trading, and implications of network upgrades and token buybacks under securities laws. Coinbase has called for increased fundraising limits through token issuance and clearer rules on airdrops and network rewards. Law firm Cahill Gordon & Reindel stated that the current proposal complicates regulatory clarity for secondary-market participants and emphasized the need for an additional safe harbor.
