Gen Z: The generation with the best investment horizon
Investment profiles vary from person to person based on several criteria, ranging from gender to geographical area, but also quite significantly when considering the different generations involved, especially when it comes to exposure to cryptocurrencies.
Indeed, baby boomers show very little interest in such assets deemed too volatile and risky, while younger generations see it as a more effective way to generate profits quickly, even though a recent study shows an increasing tendency among them for online gambling, which is considered catastrophic for their savings.

However, a recent study conducted by the head of research for the crypto asset manager Grayscale, Zach Pandl, highlights a true strategic advantage in investment that Gen Z, currently aged 15 to 29, possesses, based on their << investment horizon >>.
Investment horizon for each generation
According to this analysis, Gen Z members are those who started investing the earliest, with an average age set at 19 (compared to 25 for millennials and 35 for boomers). As a result, assuming a retirement age of 65, this allows them to benefit from an estimated investment horizon of 46 years.
Starting early is generally considered a wise choice due to the benefits of compounding, but it can also increase an investor's ability to take risks. A longer investment horizon thus offers more time to recover from periods of volatility, as well as more future income to continue saving and investing. In this sense, starting early expands the << risk budget >> of the investor throughout their life.

A favorable setup for investing in Bitcoin?
A better integration of risk-taking allows Gen Z to consider its exposure to risky assets in a completely different way, according to Zach Pandl.
Indeed, he explains how << cryptocurrencies can fit very effectively into a longer and more flexible horizon, as the return profile of this asset class is both volatile and potentially asymmetric >>.

In this logic, the significant increase in Gen Z's investment horizon allows its members to shift the risk of high short-term volatility behind that of not investing enough in high-potential assets, like Bitcoin, which has just demonstrated its unwavering superiority over the S&P 500 over a four-year holding period, regardless of the observed period.
Having several decades to rebalance their portfolio, inject capital, and capitalize through multiple market cycles, an investor who starts early may be able to allocate a larger portion of their portfolio to cryptocurrencies than one who starts later, while maintaining the balance of their overall risk throughout their life.
