Bitcoin at $90,000: The $68 Million Bet on the U.S. Midterm Elections

By: journalducoin.com|10/27/2026 05:52:34

A bullish bet, but a more complex setup than it seems. A portfolio has purchased Bitcoin options representing approximately $68 million in notional value, with a strike price of $90,000 and an expiration date of November 6, after the U.S. midterm elections. The operation, reported by CoinDesk, was executed on Derive and is accompanied by sales of other options to finance the position.

Key Points

  • The portfolio bought 800 call options targeting $90,000 for November 6.
  • The $68 million refers to the value of the underlying asset, not an amount spent.
  • The setup also includes sold options, with different expiration dates.
  • The outcome depends on Bitcoin's trajectory and the entire set of contracts, not just the $90,000 threshold.

Bitcoin at $90,000: A Positioning on Derive

On October 20, a portfolio purchased 800 call option contracts, each representing one bitcoin. Their expiration falls on November 6, three days after the U.S. election. According to Derive, this is its largest open Bitcoin position.

To finance this purchase, the portfolio also sold 400 call options at $100,000 for March 2027, as well as 400 options at $90,000 for October 30. The entire setup is estimated to have generated a net cash inflow of about $940,000 at the time of its establishment.

This detail changes the interpretation of the bet. The trader did not spend $68 million on premiums. They combined several positions whose gains and losses can offset each other, or conversely increase their exposure depending on market movements.

A call option allows profit from a rise above a set price. However, selling such an option creates a financial obligation if the market moves unfavorably for the seller. The money collected upfront does not constitute an acquired profit. The midterm elections could positively influence the price of Bitcoin (or not)

Elections Provide a Horizon, Without Guaranteeing a Rise

The November 6 expiration thus places the buying position just after the midterm elections on November 3. This timing aligns with the anticipation of a post-election movement. However, it is not sufficient to know all the motivations of the holder, whose other investments may not be necessarily visible.

The electoral outcome can alter expectations regarding economic policy and the regulation of digital assets. However, prices also react to interest rates, investment flows, and general risk appetite. No political outcome mechanically triggers a rise in Bitcoin.

The distinction between expiration dates also matters. The options sold for October 30 expire before the election, while those for March 2027 extend exposure several months afterward.

If Bitcoin finishes at $90,000 or less on November 6, the options bought for that date expire worthless. This does not mean that $68 million disappears, nor that the overall outcome of the setup is automatically negative. It also depends on the premiums collected, the contracts sold, and any adjustments made in the meantime.

This operation thus reflects a specific market scenario, not a consensus on the next direction of Bitcoin. Its scale attracts attention; its structure prevents it from being reduced to a simple bet on a rise. Answer in a few weeks.
