Arkham Defines Bitcoin's UTXO Model as Satoshi's Innovation
The on-chain analysis platform Arkham has evaluated Bitcoin's creator Satoshi Nakamoto's UTXO model as a little-known innovation. The UTXO model is an accounting structure that determines how transactions are recorded and is used by other networks such as Litecoin, Dogecoin, and Zcash, in addition to Bitcoin. Arkham stated that this structure is not exclusive to Bitcoin and serves as a foundation for many blockchains. UTXO is a system that tracks available balances in separate spendable units and was developed to prevent double-spending issues. While Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin, Dogecoin, Zcash, and Dash maintain the UTXO model, Cardano adopts the eUTXO approach. Arkham noted that the term UTXO does not appear directly in Bitcoin's technical documentation but began to be used among developers between 2011 and 2012. Section 9 of the technical document explains that a transaction must be able to carry multiple inputs and outputs. Additionally, it was recorded that Satoshi made an indirect reference to the UTXO structure in the part about reclaiming disk space.
