Aave Advances Native Bitcoin Collateral Proposal
Babylon Labs has proposed to enable native Bitcoin collateral for Aave V4 without the need for wrapped BTC or a central custodian. This proposal, presented on October 14, is currently under community review, risk analysis, and governance votes. The design utilizes Trustless Bitcoin Vaults, allowing users to lock BTC in a Taproot-based arrangement on the Bitcoin network, while Aave V4 records restricted collateral units in a dedicated lending market. These units are not intended to circulate like standard wrapped Bitcoin. The proposal aims to allow holders to borrow stablecoins against their BTC while adhering to Bitcoin-side spending conditions. However, the integration is not yet approved, as it is still in the governance stage, requiring risk parameters, community support, a Snapshot vote, and an eventual on-chain proposal. Participants in the forum have raised technical questions regarding emergency pauses and control over the vault infrastructure, which are critical in lending scenarios. This initiative represents a significant effort to link Bitcoin liquidity with Ethereum-style lending, with key operational questions still being addressed.
