49.8 Gigawatt Data Center Faces Delays in Texas Power Grid Review
AI data center investments are facing challenges due to power grid access issues. According to an analysis by Hana Financial Investment, investments in U.S. data centers are being hindered, raising concerns that delays in power supply could lead to delays in revenue. Texas has temporarily delayed the review of power grid connections for new data centers while further verifying the appropriateness of the projects. The verification process includes ownership structure, public incentives, and expected power usage. Due to the Texas measures, about 20% of the entire U.S. data center development pipeline may face delays, with the scale of related projects estimated at 49.8 gigawatts (GW). If power supply delays continue until the first quarter of 2027, approximately $8 billion in data center rental revenue could be affected. The available power connection capacity of the Texas power grid operator ERCOT is about 474 GW, which exceeds five times Texas's peak demand. New York and Pennsylvania are also introducing similar regulations, increasing the likelihood that this uncertainty will require conservative conditions from investors. Power grid access issues are significantly impacting data center development and are linked to the demand for AI computation.
