Wall Street Faces Volatility from Iran, Fed, and Political Risks
Wall Street experienced its third consecutive losing session, with the Dow falling 419 points and the Nasdaq dropping 1%. This decline is attributed to geopolitical shocks, bond market stress, and a hawkish stance from the Federal Reserve. The 10-year Treasury yield rose to 4.79%. Three main factors are contributing to market volatility. First, renewed U.S. strikes near the Strait of Hormuz have caused Brent crude to surge 4.6% to 95.70 dollars per barrel, with U.S. crude also closing above 90 dollars for the first time in over a month. Second, Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh has indicated a willingness to raise rates, increasing the likelihood of a September rate hike to 66%, up from 40% a week earlier. Third, political actions, particularly from the president, are impacting markets, with estimates suggesting a provocative post on Iran could reduce major indexes by a quarter point. The volatility is affecting digital assets as well, with Bitcoin briefly sliding below 77000 dollars amid a broader risk-off sentiment. Investors are reducing exposure in both stocks and crypto, with Ether also declining. Cramer's investing club has raised cash to over 15%, the highest level in its 25-year history, anticipating continued volatility until the situation in Iran stabilizes or the Fed's direction becomes clearer. The upcoming August jobs report on Friday may further influence rate-hike expectations.
