Ukraine and Moldova Agree to Reduce Water Discharge from the Dniester
Ukraine and Moldova have agreed to reduce the water discharge from the Dniester hydroelectric complex due to critically low water levels. The agreement was reached during the sixth extraordinary meeting of the Joint Commission for the Sustainable Use and Protection of the Dniester River Basin. The countries are working on alternative solutions to ensure water supply for the population and infrastructure amid prolonged drought conditions. The Dniester basin is experiencing one of the most challenging drought periods in its recorded history. The average water flow in August at the Zalisshchiky site dropped to 35 m³/s, the lowest level ever recorded. The situation at the Dniester reservoir remains critical. If the water level falls to 110.0 meters on the Baltic height system, discharging water from the reservoir will become impossible. The State Water Agency has imposed water use restrictions for 126 enterprises and organizations in the Dniester basin. A meeting of the State Commission on Emergency Situations was also held to address the prevention of the consequences of drought. Previously, the inflow of water into the Dniester had fallen to its lowest level since 1895, and the discharge from the reservoir was reduced to 85 m³/s.
