Tencent Chip Head Gao Jianlin Leaves to Start RISC-V AI CPU Venture
Gao Jianlin has left Tencent to embark on a new entrepreneurial journey, planning to develop high-performance AI CPUs based on the RISC-V architecture, focusing on high-performance AI servers and intelligent agents. Gao Jianlin is one of the core promoters of Tencent's self-developed chip system, having formed an FPGA hardware team in 2013, laid out AI chip research and development in 2018, and established the Penglai Laboratory in 2020, driving the development of multiple AI chips and their deployment in data centers. This new venture focuses on CPUs rather than the fiercely competitive AI GPU market. Gao Jianlin believes that with the rapid development of intelligent agents, the AI inference process will involve model invocation, tool execution, search, database interaction, and task scheduling, with CPUs playing a more significant role in scheduling and control within AI systems. During his time at Tencent, he participated in RISC-V related research and development, covering various technical directions such as chip architecture, verification, and backend. His new company plans to create high-performance server CPUs based on the open instruction set RISC-V, entering the AI infrastructure market. Currently, the name of the new company, its funding status, and specific product release dates have not been disclosed, and the market is watching to see if it can become a new force in China's AI chip sector.
