Tether's tokenized gold product, Tether Gold (XAU₮), saw a 9.5% increase in investor holdings in the second quarter, rising from 559,598.64 ounces to 612,823.66 ounces, with an additional 53,225.02 ounces, equivalent to approximately 1.66 tons of physical gold. During the same period, international gold prices fell by 14.1%, closing at $4,008.02 per ounce at the end of the quarter. Investors continued to buy XAU₮, indicating that market demand is not solely dependent on rising gold prices; some investors view price corrections as opportunities to increase their exposure to physical gold. At the end of Q2, the physical gold reserves backing XAU₮ amounted to 707,747.139 troy ounces (approximately 22.01 tons), with a gold support ratio of 1:1, and a market value of about $28.37 million, with 612,823.66 tokens sold. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino stated that the adjustments in the gold market validate the resilience of XAU₮ demand, as investors also increased their gold allocations during market corrections. Additionally, Tether International SA de CV disclosed that it has cumulatively purchased approximately 27.1 tons of gold in the first half of 2026, averaging about 4.5 tons per month. If included in the global gold reserves ranking, its holdings would rank third worldwide, only behind Poland and China.
