$3.63 Billion Hacking Losses, 60% of Platforms Completed Security Audits
Cryptocurrency platforms lost $3.63 billion to cyberattacks between January 2025 and July 2026. Approximately 60% of the affected platforms had completed independent security audits. According to a report by CoinGecko, there were 245 attacks during this period, with the top 10 accounting for 72.5% of the total losses. After audits, 147 protocols were attacked, resulting in losses that amounted to 88.44% of the total. Only about 11% of the incidents were directly caused by flaws in the audited smart contracts, with losses reaching $396 million. Centralized exchanges showed that private key theft was a major vulnerability, while decentralized applications suffered significant losses due to smart contract flaws. The platform that suffered the most was Bybit, which experienced a $1.4 billion theft incident in February 2025, contributing to the overall loss. During the ongoing security incidents, the coverage of cryptocurrency insurance decreased by 20.2%. As of August 2026, 5 out of 9 on-chain insurance protocols had either ceased operations or shifted to other sectors. This tally shows that independent security audits are not a foolproof means of preventing all attacks.
