Steak 'n Shake Reports 13.8% Increase in Sales and Adopts Bitcoin as Business Strategy
Steak 'n Shake, an American burger chain, reported a 13.8% increase in comparable store sales during the second quarter of 2026. The company has integrated bitcoin (BTC) into its business and labor compensation strategy, in addition to accepting payments in this digital asset. Operating profits before taxes for the restaurant segment rose from $3.7 million in the second quarter of 2025 to $6.3 million in the same period of 2026. Steak 'n Shake began accepting bitcoin through the Lightning Network and keeps the funds as part of a strategic reserve. In January 2026, the company conducted transactions totaling $15 million in bitcoin. Additionally, it established a bitcoin incentive of $0.21 per hour worked for certain employees, with a two-year vesting period. Although the company had previously mentioned a 15% increase in sales attributed to cryptocurrency-friendly consumers, this figure corresponds to a different period than the 13.8% recently reported.
