RWA: NYSE's Parent Company Partners with tZERO to Tokenize Wall Street
After predictive betting and tokenized stocks through its joint venture with OKX, Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), the parent company of the NYSE, adds another piece to its blockchain puzzle. It has just formed a partnership with tZERO, a platform specializing in tokenized securities (stocks represented by a digital token, exchangeable like cryptocurrency), to build the infrastructure for its future digital securities platform backed by the New York Stock Exchange. On the agenda are an investment, a license on over a hundred patents, and a leading design partner role.
Key points of this article:
- ICE has formed a strategic partnership with tZERO to develop a digital securities platform backed by the NYSE.
- tZERO has granted ICE a license on a portfolio of 103 blockchain patents while pursuing a competitor for alleged infringement of those same patents.
ICE and tZERO Join Forces to Tokenize NYSE Stocks
The two companies have signed a memorandum of understanding making tZERO the preferred design partner for the digital transfer agent and brokerage infrastructure of ICE's future "Digital Trading Platform," according to a joint statement released on Monday.
ICE is investing in tZERO's latest funding round, amount undisclosed, and in return receives a license on its blockchain patent portfolio: 23 families, 103 patents in total, covering:
- compliant transfers,
- scalable smart contracts,
- securities operations management.
Furthermore, pending regulatory approvals, tZERO is also expected to become a licensed transfer agent on the platform.
"tZERO's experience in regulated on-chain infrastructure makes it a valuable partner for our future digital transfer agent program."
Michael Blaugrund, Vice President of Strategic Initiatives at ICE
His counterpart at tZERO, CEO Alan Konevsky, also does not hide his enthusiasm:
"We have spent years building a regulated end-to-end platform for tokenized securities."
The two partners will even explore the use of tZERO's tokenized assets as collateral in ICE's clearinghouses.
ICE is multiplying blockchain bets, from the NYSE to Polymarket and OKX
Do you see the pattern emerging? ICE is stacking several bets on the same table. In June, the parent company of the NYSE formed a 50-50 joint venture with OKX to develop a common infrastructure for tokenized assets after investing in the exchange at a valuation of $25 billion in March. The two partners have also teamed up on perpetual oil contracts, another piece of the same rapprochement.
Not to forget Polymarket, where ICE has poured up to $1.6 billion since October 2025, a platform now valued at $21 billion after a funding round led by Donald Trump Jr.'s fund. There is only one logic behind all this. Locking in as much infrastructure as possible before tokenization becomes the norm rather than the exception.
tZERO Licenses Its Patents to ICE While Pursuing a Competitor for the Same Technologies
However, there is a catch. tZERO sent a cease-and-desist letter in June to Securitize, a direct competitor in tokenization, demanding the halt of two of its products for alleged patent infringement, specifically those that Securitize contests having violated. tZERO thus presents itself as both a trusted partner of ICE and as a plaintiff against a rival over this same intellectual property. A detail that does not detract from the agreement signed with ICE but reminds us that the race for tokenization is also played out in the courts, not just in boardrooms.
tZERO is also not a stranger to the industry. It obtained approval as early as 2024 to hold digital assets, one of the very first American companies to do so. This explains why ICE preferred to bet on it rather than another player.
The Nasdaq, for its part, has also sought SEC approval to list tokenized stocks. The race between the two largest U.S. stock exchanges is just beginning, and it is now being played out on the patent front as much as on the regulatory one.
