MetaMask Withdraws 523,000 ETH Due to Security Incident
In MetaMask, irregularities were detected in the flow of transaction fees directed to an unknown address. The issue, revealed by researcher 0xKaden, involved 18 out of 19 validators that were forwarding rewards to a wallet funded by the Tornado Cash mixer. It is estimated that the seized funds amount to approximately 0.36 ETH, prompting around 17,000 validators to withdraw a total of over 523,000 ETH. These actions aimed to avoid penalties for improper node operations. Despite the loss of some revenue, the main deposits remain intact. The suspension of validators will impact the market, and the process of shutting down operations will take time. An entity associated with the project transferred 133,298 ETH worth nearly $356.2 million to a new address. The Lido protocol also took steps to phase out nodes. The final withdrawal is scheduled for early October, and the return of funds to the network may take up to 45 days. Analysts indicate that the risk to customer wallets has been ruled out; however, the incident reveals operational vulnerabilities of service providers. Staking users do not need to take action to protect their assets, as the distributed key mechanism prevents theft. A key report from the investigation will clarify the causes of the system's vulnerabilities.
