MARA CEO Says Bitcoin Missed Opportunity as a Payment Method
MARA CEO Fred Thiel stated that Bitcoin has lost its chance to solidify itself as a payment method. In an interview on July 23, Thiel pointed out that the use of Bitcoin in a business environment faces practical obstacles, especially in businesses that require processing thousands of transactions per second. Even slight price fluctuations can affect the actual value received. He believes that crypto payments related to AI primarily rely on stablecoins, while Bitcoin still serves a purpose as a store of value, allowing assets to escape centralized control and be transferred quickly. Thiel distinguished the role of Bitcoin as a value-preserving asset from its adoption as a payment tool, arguing that volatility is detrimental to high-frequency commercial transactions, but it still has utility in fund custody and cross-border flows. His remarks reflect his views on the limitations of cryptocurrencies and their more feasible uses, emphasizing that different crypto assets can serve different functions in the market.
