Kai-Fu Lee: Open Models Propel China's AI to Compete for Dominance
Kai-Fu Lee stated that Chinese AI companies are rapidly catching up to the United States despite limited computing power, and that leveraging open model strategies is expected to provide advantages in global usage and user reach. In contrast, American closed model firms like OpenAI and Anthropic will occupy high-revenue positions in commercial monetization. Lee mentioned that Chinese teams are achieving near-top levels with limited GPU resources by publicly sharing papers and model weights in a collaborative learning group format, and they are serving developing countries with low-cost or free solutions. American companies, on the other hand, profit from high-priced enterprise products. He predicts that future organizational structures will be reshaped, with AI workers and those who understand design problems, integration, and responsible human roles becoming central.
