CoinDesk reports:
Before becoming one of the world's largest hedge funds, Ray Dalio initially opened doors with a more traditional consulting business: helping McDonald's address the volatility of chicken prices. This experience later became a key case in Bridgewater's early development and helped the newly established firm build a reputation among corporate clients.
Chicken Price Volatility Became a Challenge
In the late 1970s, the American diet began to change. The government had suggested reducing red meat consumption and increasing poultry and fish intake, while consumer concerns about cholesterol and cardiovascular diseases were also rising. As a result, McDonald's, which had been focused on beef burgers, accelerated its shift towards chicken products.
In 1981, McDonald's first launched Chicken 'n Chips, and later shifted its focus to what would become Chicken McNuggets. The challenge was that for chicken products to enter the menu on a large scale, the cost of raw materials needed to be more stable.
Dalio Designed a Hedging Strategy for McDonald's
At the time, Dalio was still building Bridgewater and had already accumulated experience in agricultural and commodity markets, having provided risk management advice to ranches and farming businesses. He later recalled that the most critical and volatile cost in chicken production was not the chicks themselves, but the feed.
Chicken feed primarily consists of soybean meal and corn, both of which have fluctuating prices. Dalio's approach was to design a hedging arrangement around these two raw materials, allowing chicken suppliers to provide more stable pricing to McDonald's. According to him, this strategy helped McDonald's officially launch Chicken McNuggets nationwide.
Chicken McNuggets Quickly Gained Popularity After Launch
McDonald's introduced Chicken McNuggets in 1983. Reports quote Dalio as saying that just months after the product was launched, the chain, originally focused on red meat products, had become the world's second-largest chicken retailer.
As chicken consumption continued to rise in the U.S., it gradually replaced beef as one of the more popular meat choices. Today, McDonald's sells about 700 million pounds of chicken nuggets annually.
This Business Also Provided Early Endorsement for Bridgewater
This collaboration not only helped McDonald's stabilize its supply chain costs but also gave Bridgewater higher credibility in corporate consulting and hedge fund operations. Reports mention that Bridgewater later secured a $5 million investment from the World Bank, one of its most important early funding sources.
Dalio founded Bridgewater in 1975 in a two-bedroom apartment in New York. As the business expanded, the company moved to Wilton, Connecticut, in 1981 and operated out of a converted barn. By the mid-1980s, the Bridgewater team had grown to about 10 people.
As of July this year, Bridgewater manages assets exceeding $102 billion. Reports also mention that after Nir Bar Dea took over as CEO in 2022, Bridgewater has been exploring AI-assisted investment research and decision-making.
