Honda and Nissan Collaborate on Next-Generation Automotive Software
Honda Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Co. have agreed to jointly develop software and standardized electronic control units (ECUs) for next-generation vehicles. The companies will create a new onboard operating system, common specifications for the central architecture, middleware, and software for vehicle management. The implementation of the new architecture in production vehicles is scheduled for the fiscal year starting in April 2029. The primary reason for the partnership is the growth of the Software-Defined Vehicles segment and pressure from Chinese brands like BYD and Xiaomi, which are actively releasing technologically advanced electric vehicles and hybrids. The collaboration will help shorten research durations and optimize costs for developing autonomous driving systems, multimedia, and wireless updates. The Nissan alliance is in talks about the potential involvement of Mitsubishi Motors in the project. This is the first major agreement between the automotive giants following the cessation of merger talks in 2025.
