Government Changes Rules for Foreign Volunteers in the Armed Forces of Ukraine
The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a draft law that strengthens the legal protection of foreigners and stateless persons participating in the defense of Ukraine. Prime Minister Serhiy Koretsky stated that the document expands the rights of foreign defenders after the completion of their military contracts. The legal temporary residence period in Ukraine is extended from three to six months to simplify the regulation of legal status. The period of military service will be counted towards the mandatory five-year residence period required for obtaining immigration permission. For individuals who cannot obtain or exchange their passports due to threats to their lives or political persecution, a special foreigner identification document will be introduced for traveling abroad. The draft law has been submitted for consideration by the Verkhovna Rada. In July, the Cabinet approved unified rules for accompanying foreign volunteers, regulating the entire process from traveling to Ukraine to signing a military service contract.
