The blockchain and crypto asset industry in Indonesia is entering a new phase as regulatory frameworks strengthen and the utilization of blockchain technology expands across various sectors through the tokenization of real-world assets (RWA), intellectual property tokenization, and the development of digital infrastructure. This development marks an industry framework that not only focuses on trading crypto assets but also on strengthening the ecosystem to create broader and more inclusive economic value.

Regulation as the Foundation for Industry Advancement

INDODAX CEO, William Sutanto, sees the transition of crypto asset oversight to the Financial Services Authority (OJK) as proceeding relatively well through a soft landing approach. According to him, the next phase needs to focus on strengthening the ecosystem, particularly through broader integration with other financial service institutions and regulations that continue to allow space for innovation.

"We do not see the transition to OJK as something to be feared. The soft landing approach has made the process of change quite smooth. The most important thing is how increasingly robust regulatory certainty can serve as a foundation for the industry to become a space for innovation and broader integration with the financial ecosystem while still ensuring consumer protection," William stated during a panel discussion at Indonesia Blockchain Week 2026.

At the same time, William believes that the regulatory framework needs to continue to be based on space for innovation, access to broader markets, and consumer protection. Given the rapidly developing crypto industry, the ability to accommodate innovation is crucial for domestic players to grow and compete globally.

"The crypto industry is evolving very quickly. Therefore, what needs to be continuously sought is a balance so that innovation still has room to develop while consumer protection remains a priority," he explained.

On the market side, William sees the increasing number of licensed exchanges as a positive development because it provides choices for consumers. However, amid the decline in global crypto trading volumes, he reminds that market volume must move in balance with the growth in the number of players. This is to mitigate the risk of consolidation in the national crypto industry.

"The more players there are, the more choices consumers have. However, we also need to see how the market continues to develop. Because if the number of players increases while the market volume does not grow accordingly, consolidation could become one of the dynamics that occur in the future," he added.

Tokenization Expands Blockchain Utilization in Real Sectors

Amid the strengthening of the crypto industry, the utilization of blockchain technology is also beginning to expand into broader economic needs. One example is the discussion regarding asset tokenization as an alternative financing method for development.

The Minister of National Development Planning/Head of Bappenas, Rachmat Pambudy, explained that through blockchain, various assets such as securities, commodities, gold, property, and infrastructure can be digitally represented and divided into smaller units, thus potentially expanding investment access.

"Small investors, medium investors, and large investors can become part of the investment ecosystem due to blockchain and the ability to digitize assets and divide them into smaller and more affordable parts for investors," he stated.

The utilization of blockchain technology is also beginning to be built in the creative economy sector. The Minister of Creative Economy/Head of the Creative Economy Agency, Teuku Riefky Harsya, sees blockchain and Web3 as opening new opportunities in managing and commercializing Indonesia's intellectual property.

"Blockchain opens up space to strengthen policies, licensing, royalties, and to present new financing models based on IP. However, one principle must be maintained: innovation must go hand in hand with legal certainty and consumer protection," he stated.

From Market Growth to Economic Impact

These various opportunities indicate that the development of blockchain is beginning to shift from infrastructure development to more concrete utilization. As the application of this technology becomes more widespread, the development of innovation also needs to proceed alongside adaptive regulations, strong compliance, and governance that can support sustainable ecosystem growth.
