France to Invest 12 GW in Computing to Compete with the US and China
France must build 12 gigawatts of computing capacity by 2029 to compete with the United States and China, according to Aymeric Roucher from Hugging Face. This project is compared to the nuclear program of the 1960s. The energy consumption of data centers in the United States is expected to reach 194 GW by 2035, making electrical power crucial. France, with its nuclear fleet, has abundant and low-carbon electricity, exporting about 100 TWh per year. The French ecosystem includes more than 700 AI startups, including Mistral AI and Hugging Face, and has received 2.5 billion euros from the France 2030 plan. However, challenges remain, including delays in connecting to the electrical grid and reliance on American technologies. Experts believe that the next 3 to 5 years will be decisive for the emergence of new French champions.
