Fields Medalist Claims OpenAI Destroys His Research Field
In a statement at the French Mathematical Society, 2022 Fields Medalist Hugo Duminil-Copin expressed that OpenAI has destroyed his research direction. He mentioned that he cried about it on Tuesday night, waking his daughter. At least 16 papers related to his long-term research interests were included in the results released by OpenAI earlier this month. Since April of this year, the AI company has frequently announced solutions to unresolved mathematical problems. Earlier this month, OpenAI publicly released over 700 papers, claiming to have solved hundreds of outstanding mathematical questions. Stephane Mallat, a recipient of the 2025 Gold Medal from the French National Center for Scientific Research, stated that the achievements of AI have brought emotional shocks, but society still needs mathematicians, opposing the notion that they are no longer necessary.
