Fed Vice Chair Bowman Warns of Increased Cyber Threats to Banks Due to AI Proliferation
Michelle Bowman, the Vice Chair for Supervision of the Federal Reserve, warned that the proliferation of AI is complicating the cyber threat environment for banks. AI can enhance vulnerability detection and social engineering attacks, lowering the barriers to entry for cybercrime, and can also be utilized as a defensive tool by financial institutions. Vice Chair Bowman emphasized that banks must use AI safely and strategically while finding a balance between innovation and risk management. He stated that to secure cyber resilience, it is necessary to implement proactive risk management by the board and management, employee training, and incident response system checks, in addition to technology. Vice Chair Bowman explained the cyber risks and response strategies associated with AI proliferation at the '2026 Community Bank Cyber Workshop' held in Denver, Colorado, on the 29th. He noted that many regional banks have experienced cyber incidents in the past year, highlighting the growing importance of basic cybersecurity systems and resilience. Vice Chair Bowman mentioned that AI offers significant potential for both attackers and defenders, stressing that banks must continuously evolve their cyber defense strategies. He also pointed out the need for up-to-date asset inventories, multi-factor authentication, access controls, vulnerability identification, and patch management programs, adding that cybersecurity cannot be built solely on technology.
