EU Allocates 115 Million Euros to Spain for Migration Crisis in Ceuta
The European Union has granted an emergency aid of 115 million euros to Spain to strengthen management in Ceuta, following the massive arrival of migrants from Morocco at the end of July. The European Commission detailed that the funds will be used to optimize border surveillance, incorporate advanced technology such as thermal cameras, and deploy additional personnel in the area. The package also aims to support the return of individuals who are illegally in Ceuta and strengthen the capacity of the autonomous city to care for unaccompanied minors. Approximately 70,000 migrants forcibly entered Ceuta on July 30 and 31, resulting in dozens of deaths and disappearances. Although most migrants returned shortly after, the impact on the territory continues: the government of Pedro Sánchez estimates that 5,000 migrants still remain there, while the Ceuta regional government raises that number to at least 10,000, reflecting a serious social situation with hundreds of people sleeping on streets and beaches. In this context, Juan Jesús Vivas, president of Ceuta, requested assistance from the European Union and accused Morocco of being behind this massive influx.
