DogeOS Launches Ethereum-Compatible Dogecoin DeFi Public Testnet Introducing Lending and Stablecoin Financial Scenarios

In the cryptocurrency community (120btc.CoM): Recently, the DogeOS development team announced the launch of a public test network compatible with Ethereum. This move signifies that Dogecoin (DOGE) is attempting to transition from a single value storage asset to a decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem with practical use cases. According to documents disclosed by the team to CoinDesk, the testnet was officially activated this Wednesday, allowing developers to build decentralized applications directly using existing Ethereum toolchains, with transaction friction costs settled in test version DOGE. Currently, several core infrastructure projects, including lending protocols, decentralized exchanges, and over-collateralized stablecoins for crypto assets, have entered the early research and development stage.

Dogecoin currently has a circulating market capitalization of $13 billion, firmly positioned among the top cryptocurrency assets globally. However, due to the limitations of a single payment transfer underlying architecture, a vast amount of tokens have remained idle for a long time. By introducing cross-chain mechanisms and an independent smart contract operating layer, DogeOS provides a potential avenue for the large existing funds to earn passive income, attempting to give holders a real holding logic beyond betting on price fluctuations.

Decentralization of Underlying Assets Still Requires Time

In the process of cross-chain circulation of underlying assets, the reconstruction of trust mechanisms is particularly crucial. Currently, the security of DogeOS still heavily relies on officially selected node operators and specific hardware facilities: transactions are ordered by authorized sequencers, and verification nodes validate computational proofs in a trusted execution environment (TEE), subject to oversight by a security committee. In other words, the system essentially operates as a centralized permissioned network in its initial phase, and the underlying Dogecoin miner community has not yet substantively engaged in the ecosystem's verification process.

According to the long-term roadmap, DogeOS plans to smoothly transfer verification rights to the miner network by upgrading the core Dogecoin code. This vision relies on a technical proposal named OP_CHECKZKP, scheduled for release in July 2025, which aims to allow mainnet nodes to verify external computational proofs. However, the implementation details submitted in December of the same year are still in draft form, and the proof verification module exists only as a placeholder. There is currently no clear timeline from the officials on when the mainnet will be able to fully detach from centralized components and complete the underlying architecture iteration.

Application Chain Narrative Faces Historical Challenges

Behind the active expansion of the on-chain ecosystem lies the persistent sluggishness of existing spot investment channels. After Bitwise officially announced the closure of its Dogecoin ETF product, the urgency to create a native application narrative has significantly increased. Market data shows that the three existing related ETFs in the U.S. market have only absorbed about $12 million in net funds over the past ten months; out of a total of 199 trading days, as many as 166 days have been in a state of zero net inflow. At the time of Bitwise's liquidation, its fund asset size was even less than $700,000.

Jordan Jefferson, founder of MyDoge wallet, pointed out that to attract institutional capital, relying solely on liquidity and community culture has become insufficient. He advocates for abandoning mere price speculation and instead building a real on-chain economic cycle based on DogeOS. However, looking back at the development history of meme coin application chains, such attempts often come with extremely high risks of decline. For example, Dogechain, launched in 2022, once attracted about $4.6 million in locked volume within a few days, but now the remaining funds for related financial applications have shrunk to less than $300; the Shibarium network launched by the Shiba Inu (SHIB) ecosystem in 2023 has also not escaped this fate, with its on-chain financial application scale plummeting from a peak of $6.4 million to about $140,000.

Unlike Dogechain, which was previously severed by officials, DogeOS has received public endorsement from executives of the Dogecoin Foundation this time. However, historical data suggests that meme coin derivative networks are generally prone to quickly depleting liquidity traps. Before the core verification module transitions from draft to formal activation, the project still needs to find a difficult balance between centralized trust and ecological fund retention.
