Forest fires and abnormal heat in France, Spain, Portugal, Greece, and Romania have caused economic damage exceeding €3.1 billion, significantly surpassing the EU's average annual fire damage of €2.5 billion. In the first two months of the fire season, approximately 500,000 hectares of land were burned in the five countries. The stated amount reflects only the cost of recovery; actual losses will be much higher due to damage assessments on property, crops, and the tourism sector. In the Gironde department of France, production has been halted at companies such as Safran, Dassault Aviation, and ArianeGroup, affecting at least 40,000 businesses. In Spain, the fire has destroyed over 18,500 hectares of agricultural land and has come within 50 kilometers of Madrid. The energy and logistics crisis is exacerbated by drought: declining water levels in the Rhine and Danube complicate transportation, while record low water levels in the Danube threaten to halt operations at a nuclear power plant in Hungary. The final loss amount is expected to be three times the region's average annual GDP damage figures.
