Crypto money laundering cases increase 152-fold in first half
Crypto-linked money laundering cases surged nearly 152-fold in the first half, totaling 1,214 out of 1,529 detected virtual-asset offenses, or 79.4% of the total. This marks a significant increase from just eight cases detected last year. The report indicates a shift in the composition of crypto-related crime; while investment fraud accounted for 92% of illegal activity last year, money laundering emerged as the largest crime category in the first half at 79%. This change is attributed to the increased use of virtual assets for moving criminal proceeds overseas from activities such as drug trafficking, gambling, voice phishing, and chat-room investment scams, as well as the rise of organizations focused solely on laundering.
