Citi Questions Need for Aggressive Fed Rate Hikes Amid Inflation Forecasts
Citi Research questions the necessity of aggressive rate hikes by the Federal Reserve (Fed), despite forecasting global headline inflation at 3.5% for this year. The Fed raised rates in September, attributed to a strong economy and inflation exceeding targets. However, Citi's Global Chief Economist Nathan Sheets suggests a weaker case for further aggressive tightening. Brent crude prices remain near 105美元 per barrel, pushing global inflation forecasts nearly one percentage point higher than earlier estimates. Diesel prices have surged nearly 50% more than crude oil, while gasoline prices are up about 20%. Core inflation, excluding food and energy, has also increased, with Citi raising forecasts for major economies by approximately 50 basis points since February. Despite this, long-term inflation expectations remain stable across major economies, indicating continued trust in central banks. Citi notes that 20 of the 27 major central banks it tracks have higher rate forecasts than in February, with 10-year government bond yields rising by 60 to 100 basis points. A rising neutral rate, currently at 3.2%, and increased investment in artificial intelligence (AI) are identified as key drivers. In Asia, Citi anticipates the Bank of Japan will implement three more rate hikes by the end of 2027, raising its policy rate to 2%. Citi believes the inflation battle is winnable but ongoing, warning that sustained 100美元 oil prices could lead to higher inflation and slower growth.
