Circle: USDC Aims for Around Forty New Emerging Markets
The greenback is making its rounds in the tropics. The digital dollar is now making its way to places where bank ATMs are scarce. On Friday, Jeremy Allaire, CEO and co-founder of Circle, announced to Reuters an offensive of USDC towards around forty emerging and developing markets. The demand for digital dollars is swelling in Southeast Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East, while Europe is putting its stablecoins under MiCA. The time for experiments is over, summarizes the main interested party, but for mass deployment.
Key Points of This Article:
- Circle aims for about 40 new markets, from Southeast Asia to Latin America and Africa.
- Now, its CEO speaks of a turning point, moving from early adopters to mass deployment.
- USDC has about 73 billion dollars in circulation, accounting for nearly a quarter of the market, behind Tether with its 60%.
- For reference, the acquisition of Tazapay, the Arc blockchain, and the federal approval in July serve as levers for the offensive.
About Forty Markets and a CEO Convinced of the Turning Point
The announcement came on the sidelines of the IMF and World Bank meetings in Bangkok. According to the head of Circle, businesses and individuals in these regions are increasingly turning to stablecoins for payments and fund transfers. For reference, a stablecoin is a cryptocurrency designed to maintain a fixed value of 1 to 1 with a traditional currency, here the dollar.
<< We are somewhat going through a turning point, a transition. It essentially moves blockchain from the early adopter phase to the public scale phase >>
In practice, the stakes go beyond trading. Stablecoins are gaining ground in everyday payments and international transfers. As a result, Circle is now competing with banks and payment companies on their own turf, that of cross-border money.
The circulating USDC is nearing 73 billion dollars, after a 19% increase year-on-year, according to the company. In the stablecoin market, the issuer of the second-largest stablecoin globally accounts for nearly a quarter, according to CoinDesk data. Tether and its USDT hold nearly 60%.
Tazapay, Arc, Federal Approval: The Arsenal for Conquest
The offensive relies on already laid pieces. New markets also mean Tether's historical ground. In September, Circle acquired the Singaporean payment company Tazapay for 400 million dollars, a significant acquisition that opens access to local banking and payment networks in over 100 markets.
On its part, the company launched Arc, a blockchain tailored for payments. It also obtained a federal trust bank license in the USA in July.
Allaire also credits regulatory clarity, starting with the American GENIUS Act dedicated to stablecoins, for encouraging adoption. Banks, which are developing their own digital currencies, receive his encouragement. For many years, banks kept newcomers at bay. Now, they are no longer in control, savors Circle's co-founder, and innovators are having their day.
Allaire also points to an emerging use case, that of artificial intelligence agents, software capable of autonomously making small payments for information and online services.
Europe is also organizing around these backed currencies. The euro stablecoin Qivalis has thus obtained its approval, two years after the American Circle. For now, Tether maintains control with nearly 60% of the market. The battle for cross-border payments is just beginning.
