Indonesia's OJK Announces Expansion of Cryptocurrency Regulations
The Financial Services Authority of Indonesia (OJK) has proposed a regulatory direction that expands cryptocurrencies from being merely a trading target to a part of the financial infrastructure. Key tasks include establishing an investor identification system, regulations for stablecoins, and the institutionalization of real-world asset tokenization (RWA). OJK's Adi Budiarso stated during the keynote speech at Coinfest Asia 2026 that "Indonesia's on-chain economy is coming." In a press release in July, OJK indicated that it views cryptocurrency asset service providers as part of the financial services industry, prioritizing the review of SID introduction and the completion of RWA tokenization regulations. As of June 2026, there are 22.69 million cryptocurrency investors in Indonesia, with trading volumes totaling 28.58 trillion rupiah. OJK is preparing a draft regulation for RWA tokenization and has also included the refinement of stablecoin regulations as a roadmap task. Indonesia is creating a regulatory framework that does not limit cryptocurrency regulations to exchange licensing but also includes investor identification, clearing, custody, and the issuance of tokenized assets. The final regulations and implementation schedule will be announced in subsequent OJK documents.
